Chapter History

Picture
MAY 12, 1890, was the historic day in the life of Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta when it was installed at the University of Minnesota. It is interesting to note that the University was also in its infancy, and during that year there were only four hundred and fifty students enrolled.

Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta was the eighth fraternity on the campus of the University of Minnesota. Other fraternities, which had previously established chapters, were the following: Chi Psi (1874), Phi Delta Theta (1881), Delta Tau Delta (1883), Sigma Chi (1888), Phi Kappa Psi (1888), Beta Theta Pi (1889), and Delta Kappa Epsilon (1889).

Internationally, Phi Gamma Delta was founded on May 1, 1848, at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. The founders of the Fraternity, known as the Immortal Six, were John Templeton McCarty, Samuel Beatty Wilson, James Elliott, Ellis Bailey Gregg, Daniel Webster Crofts, and Naaman Fletcher.  Currently we have 120 chapters and have initiated over 166,000 active brothers.
